Implementing First Nations music can be valuable in any classroom; however, when introduced in a grade 3 class, a large number of the learner outcomes are addressed. Students will have the opportunity to explore the culture in depth through the lens of music, and understand the concept of music from a different perspective. First nation’s music has a much greater focus on community, rather than on the individual, and students will begin to understand how their music-making is greatly influenced by the environment they live in.
In terms of the Program of Studies, Grade 3 students will address various outcomes with regards to Health and Life skills, Science, English Language Arts, Social Studies, Art, Math, Music and Physical Education (Alberta Education, 2006).
